Post subject:  Marking latest chapter as read w/ochanging current chapter

Hi there,

sorry if this has already been brought up but I couldn't find a similar thread after skimming through the first two pages of this forum.

Problem description:
Right now AMR marks mangas where the latest chapter read does not equal the latest published chapter as new (i.e. incrementing the badge counter and displaying the manga entry in red in the reading list). Using "mark latest published chapter as read" will also set the latest chapter read counter to match the latest published chapter (confusing much?). Usually I want to get rid of the red notification but without changing my latest chapter read. Right now AMR mixes mangas where I have reached the latest published chapter at some point and for which a new chapter was released with mangas which I haven't reached the latest published chapter ever. This is confusing and kinda lessens the utility of the new chapter notification as I have this constantly red number glaring at me for all mangas where I haven't managed to read all published chapters yet.

Solution proposal:
Add an additional reading intermediate state:

1) State 1: New chapter(s) released (similar to the current new state with all the badge goodness and red visualization)
2) State 2: Latest published chapter != latest chapter read (would need a new color and sorting options)
3) State 3: Latest published chapter == latest chapter read (similar to the current read state)

If a manga is in state 2 and a new chapter is released it moves to state 1. Pressing the "mark latest published chapter as red" returns the entry to state 2 without changing the latest chapter red (i.e. one acknowledges that a new chapter was released and dismisses the notification). Not sure what should happen when a manga moves from state 3 to state 1 when pressing the button. It could either move to state 2 as well then or back to state 3 by setting the latest chapter read to the latest published chapter but I think it would be slightly confusing having the button do two separate things depending on the initial state.

And thanks for all the work on AMR, it's a great tool indeed. :-)

I'm not sure why you'd want that... but you could always hit "stop following updates" (in the arrow menu by each manga)...

That'll turn the manga gray, and give you what you want I think...

Sorry if my use case was not explained clearly so let me try it again:

Right now AMR marks all mangas as having at least one unread chapter as long as the last read chapter is lower than the last published chapter. This creates the following problems for me:

1) Mangas for which I haven't reached the last chapter yet (last read chapter < last published chapter) are marked as having unread chapters. This is even true for mangas which are finished and do not get receive any more updates.

2) Due to issue 1 updates to ongoing mangas, where I actually am following the latest updates in a timely manner get drowned in the ones where I haven't reached the latest published yet. This muddles the visual information which mangas I simply haven't finished reading yet and the ones that received an actual update. These are two separate states which get currently subsumed under the unread state.

I argue that update notification and unread status should be separated visually with update status taking precedence (i.e. the badge only shows the number of updated mangas for which I haven't dismissed the notification yet in any way) and not the amount of unread mangas.

Using myself as a concrete exampe:

I currently read about 9 mangas in parallel for which I haven't reached the latest published chapter yet. So I have a permanent 9 attached to my AMR icon. In addition to that I have a handful of mangas which I managed to catch up and which get updated occasionally (e.g. Vagabond). The update notifications for the second group are drowned in my not-yet-finished mangas unless I happen to notice that the badge changed or noticed the desktop notification.

Yes, I understood that. I only meant that if you want them separated, then you can do as I did and hit "stop following updates" on all the manga that you are currently reading (the ones that are unfinished). Then, you wont recieve updates for those manga until you get to the last chapter and hit "start receiving updates". Not only will it be marked as gray in your reading list, so you know which manga you are currently reading, but whenever there are new chapters for the unread manga, AMR reader will not notify you.

This acts as an intermediate state so users dont get overwhelmed by the amount of unread mangas. Even better, users can either choose to use this functionality, or not.

Oh cool, I didn't understand that the first time. Thanks for your patient explanation. :-)
